DCSF confirms £27 million to fund Booktrust's free-book programmes.

A message from Viv Bird, CEO of Booktrust.

Booktrust is very grateful to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), children’s publishers and our local authorities and health partners who give us such enormous support for Bookstart which enables us to fulfil our mission to help all young children develop a lifelong love of books. We are delighted that the government has agreed to provide further funding to support the programmes Bookstart, Booktime and Booked Up, which give free books to children, for another three years.

Booktrust is the largest book charity in the UK and the only charity carrying out work of this kind. The government recognises this important and unique work, and how it is extending the UK’s reputation as forerunner in the fields of learning and well-being.

Booktrust is run through a number of public-private partnerships, which means that for every £1 invested by the DCSF Booktrust generates an additional £4 with the support of its sponsors. The Bookstart programme has proved so successful and popular that it has been replicated internationally and is now affiliated with 22 programmes across the world. Booktrust dedicates its work to encouraging a love of books from an early age, to help every child to realise their potential as readers and learners from the start, which is essential for all children.'
