National Year of Reading Autumn Challenge
The NYR is challenging schools to run activity this term which encourages broader forms of reading, using the monthly themes for inspiration. The winning primary and secondary schools will each win £2000 worth of OUP reading materials, plus two spot prizes of £500. Anything that you can do to spread the word amongst the schools you work with about the Challenge would be great.
Use this website for more ideas and information about titles which might attract and enthuse boys of 11-14 about reading for pleasure.
Encourage your pupils to enter the Booktrust Teenage Prize. The deadline is Monday 28 July 2008

Everybody Writes offers classroom teachers innovative ideas and practical resources to get primary pupils and secondary students excited about writing.
The Everybody Writes approach is about exploring writing beyond the classroom and taking it into the playground, communities and even the workplace. Everybody Writes encourages schools to try out new and interesting ways of initiating writing and to offer their young people a real audience for their writing.
Resources for English teachers
ReadMe is a new set of resources for English teachers created by the National Schools Partnership on behalf of the National Year of Reading.
The resources provide ideas and lesson plans to use in class, in particular to encourage 11- to 14-year-old boys to read more inside and outside the classroom. English teachers designed the resources to support the Key Stage 3 curriculum and the renewed National Strategy Framework for English. The resources also suggest cross-curricular opportunities.
The first 500 schools to sign up will receive a free CD-ROM of the resources.
Visit the National Schools Partnership website for more information
