The Dying Photo The Dying Photo

by Alan Gibbons

Jimmy is Christmas shopping with his parents, when a mysterious stranger offers to take their photograph. In a flash, his Mum and Dad have disappeared and all that is left is a photo of them screaming. Before long Jimmy meets new friend Amy and finds out he is not alone. Together they decide to track down the photographer and try to get their parents back.

This chilling story is short and snappy - perfect if you like a quick read.

Publisher: Barrington Stoke

Extract

'The photographer pointed the camera at them. “Look at the birdy,” he said.

Just then Jimmy noticed somebody waving. He turned and stared. It was a girl his age.

What did she want? He was still looking at her when the camera flashed.

After that the world went crazy. Jimmy was alone. The photographer had gone.

So had the girl.

So had his parents.

“Mum?” he said. “Dad?”

But they were nowhere to be seen. He ran to the main road. Where had they gone? They had been right there, next to him. Now they were gone. His heart began to pound.

“Where are you?” he shouted.

His eyes were stinging with tears. He ran back to where they had been standing. Then he saw something on the ground. He bent down and picked it up. In his hand he had a black and white photo, one of those old negatives. The moment he looked at the photo, his skin went cold. It showed his mum and dad.

Their eyes were wide.

Their mouths were open.

They were screaming.'

This book was really interesting and fun to read. The way Alan describes the creepy photographer is out of the ordinary! For me it became a cliffhanger when Jimmy was left all alone without his parents but instead Mr and Mrs Trent! It got me imagining what it would be like for me if that happened to me. Overall it was amazing! I would recommend The Dying Photo to a friend.

This book is a very interesting book i like the way alan describes the photographer as a creepy and misterious man. He describes all the characters as scared and worried but yet very determined. The front cover to this story describes the whole of the book and with the fire pictures and screaming. The only bit i didn't understand was if morgan slade was alive or not? But every thing else about the book is very good and well described.

The Dying Photo is a very interesting book with a mysterious story line. The boy in the book jack is out shopping with his parents when a strange looking man comes up to him and asks them if they want a Christmas picture taken. So they say yes but suddenly Jack's parents disappear in a flash. This story was exciting but peculiar but I recommend it to people who enjoy good stories who are aged between 7-12 years of age.

The Dying Photo is about a boy called Jimmy whose parents get turned into a photo so, as you would guess, he tries to get them back.

The main character is Jimmy, of course, but I don't think he is very believable because your parents don't get turned into photos much, do they? Right!?

But anyway, my favourite character is Morgan Slade (the photographer) because it is awesome stealing people's souls just by taking their picture. I have done one thing he does too! It is... it is... yes, it's take a photo (but not take peoples soul : ( (*sad*)).

My favourite part of the book is the end because it has some action in it. My least favourite part is the start because it is confusing and weird. Over all, though I haven't been saying it, I wouldn't recommend this book unless it was a first read because it has a large font size, gaps, pictures and it's very short.

The dying photo is a thrilling book for ages 7 - 9 year olds due to the fact the text is big and the book is only 55 pages long.

My opinion of this book is that it doesn't lose your interest as well as it being very unpredictable. The dying photo is about a boy called Jimmy. It starts off with Jimmy and his parents walking in Liverpool town centre, when a man asks if they want their photo taken. Jimmy is reluctant, however Jimmy's parents agree, little do they know that the photographer takes people's souls.

My favourite part of this is when Jimmy confronts Morgan Slade (the photographer) in a showdown to see who will win. One of the bad points of this book for me is when Jimmy is telling the police about what has happened and all they do is laugh at him and i think that too many books do this and the author is being a bit of a copy cat.

The dying photo is about a strange man called Morgan Slade who takes photos of people and then they dissappear. One day a young boy called Jimmy and his parents were out and then Morgan Slade came up to them and took a picture of Jimmy's parents. They had vanished. Jimmy meets a girl called Amy whose parents had gone too. They fight to beat Morgan Slade and free all the people he had stolen.

Jimmy: is a young boy and he is very normal and realistic character. i think this because he has a normal life and a normal family. Amy: is the same as Jimmy, a young girl with a realistic life. Parents: are the same as Jimmy and Amy. Morgan Slade: is a strange man and is a fantasy character.

My favourite character is Jimmy because even though his parents have gone and Amy to, he still try's to defeat Morgan Slade on his own...

My favourite part of the book was the ending of the book because ********* (Editor: We can't reveal the ending!). Also because it's funny. My least favourite part of the book was that there was a whole chapter describing Amy and a conversation with Jimmy and Amy.

I would recommend it to people who like scary and fantasy stories because it is all of these things
