At the Sign of the Sugared Plum At the Sign of the Sugared Plum

The prequel to Petals in the Ashes
by Mary Hooper

It’s 1665 and Hannah can’t wait to move to London to help at her sister Sarah’s shop The Sugared Plum.

She dreams of the clothes she’ll wear and the people she’ll meet, knowing nothing of the nightmare that awaits her. Death is stalking London, and Hannah and Sarah can do little but watch and wait…

The sights and sounds of plague-ridden London are brought to life in this tense historical tale.

'To tell the truth, I was rather glad to get away from Farmer Price and his rickety old cart. He made me uneasy with his hog’s breath and his red, sweaty face and the way he’d suddenly bellow out laughing at nothing at all. I was uneasy, too, about something he’d said when I’d told him I was going to London to join my sister Sarah in her shop.

"You be going to live in the City, Hannah?" he’d asked, pushing his battered hat up over his forehead. "Wouldn’t think you’d want to go there."

"Oh, but I do!" I’d said, for I’d been set on living in London for as long as I could remember. "I’m fair desperate to reach the place."

"Times like this . . . thought your sister would try and keep you away."

"No, she sent for me specially," I’d said, puzzled.

"Her shop is doing well and she wants my help in it. I’m to be trained in the art of making sweetmeats," I’d added.

"Sweetmeats is it?" He’d given one of his bellows. "That’s comfits for corpses, then!"

He left me in Southwarke on the south bank of the Thames, and I thanked him, slipped down from his cart and – remembering to take my bundle and basket from the back – began to walk down the crowded road towards London Bridge.

As the bridge came into view I stopped to draw breath, putting down my baggage but being careful to keep my things close by, for I’d been warned often enough about the thieving cutpurses and murderous villains who thronged the streets of London. I straightened my skirts and flounced out my petticoat to show off the creamy ruff of lace I’d sewn onto it – Sarah had told me that petticoats were now worn to be seen – then pushed down my hair to try and flatten it. This was difficult for, to my great vexation, it stuck out as curly as the tails of piglets and was flame red. Nothing I wore, be it hat, hood or cap, could contain it. I pulled my new white cap down tightly, however, and tied the ribbons into a tidy bow under my chin. I hoped I looked a pleasant and comely sight walking across into the city, and that no one would look at me and realise that I was a newly arrived country girl.

It was a hot day even though it was only the first of June, and all the hotter for me because I was wearing several layers of clothes. This wasn’t because I’d misjudged the weather, more because I knew that whatever I didn’t wear, I’d have to carry. I had on then: a cambric shift, two petticoats, a dark linseywoolsey skirt and a linen blouse. Over these was a short jacket which had been embroidered by my mother, and a dark woollen shawl lay across my shoulders.

I’d been studying the people carefully as we’d neared the bridge, hoping that I might see my friend Abigail, who’d come from our village last year to be a maid in one of the big houses, and also hoping to see some great lady, a person of quality, so I could judge how well I stood against her regarding fashion. There was no sign of Abby, however, and most of the quality were in sedan chairs or carriages, with only the middling and poorer sort on foot. These folk were wearing a great variety of things: men were in tweedy country clothes, rough working worsteds or the severely cut suits and white collars of the Puritans, the women wearing everything from costly velvet down to poor rags that my mother would have scorned to use as polishing cloths for the pewter.

"That’s a fine red wig you’ve got there, lass!" a young male voice said, and I realised that I’d paused beside a brewhouse.

I turned indignantly on the speaker. "It’s not a wig. It’s my own hair!" I said to the two men – one young and one old – who were leaning against the wall, mugs of ale in their hands.

"And fine patches across your nose, too," said the elder.

I opened my mouth to say more and then realised that the youth and man outside the Gown and Claret were making fun of me.

"They’re not patches, William, they’re called sun kisses!" the first said, and they both roared with laughter.

I picked up my basket, feeling my cheeks go pink. I hated my hair, but even more than that I hated my freckles, and one of the first things I intended to do in London was to visit an apothecary and see what treatment the great ladies were using for their prevention. I pushed my nose into the air and moved on, only just avoiding a deep rut in the road full of all manner of foul-smelling muck. As I faltered, my foot slipped out of my wooden clog, but I regained my balance, picked up my skirts and carefully negotiated around the rut.

"Well danced, young miss!" called over the older man.

"It’s a young red bantum fresh up from the country!" said the youth, and I pretended not to hear. At home I was always being teased about my vivid colouring but I hadn’t thought I’d stand out in London, too.

"A spring chicken ripe for the plucking!"

"You mind a piece of old Cromwell up there don’t fall on you!" the first went on.

"An eyeball or an ear!"

Before I could stop myself I’d glanced up to the over-arching gateway to London Bridge, where there was a collection of human heads pierced by poles, and let out a small shriek of horror.

I heard further mannish laughter behind me and was annoyed for being so green, for I’d known well enough that the heads of felons were displayed on the bridge – and I’d even been to a public execution – so it should have been nothing to me. The thought of a piece of one of those heads, though, one of those mouldered skulls, falling as I passed underneath – well, I forgave myself that shriek.'

Hannah (a teenage girl) is going to a trip to London to help her sister (called Sarah in a sweet shop). But what Hannah didn't know, is that the plague hit London (since it was the 16th centuary). Sarah sent Hannah a letter saying that the plague hit London. But it goes all wrong. The book seems real, like it was back in the 16th century, because Mary Hooper (the author) puts lots of adjectives to describe what it might have been like at the time.

It has an insight about what the plague was like and describes the characters in lots of detail. At the end it is really sad because her friend dies with the plague but has a hopeful smile as she dies on the steps of her mistresses home. Although this may sound interesting from how I have summed it up but the author describes it in lots of detail which creates a really clear and imaginative image in your head.

I was drawn to this book by the front cover and the fact that it was set around a historical event. At first I found this book difficult to read and understand because of the use of old English words. Once I got into the book, I found it interesting but at the same time quite upsetting due to the fact that the story is based around the plague and death. I really like Hannah, she is a happy and kind person who is willing to help her sister anytime. I would recommend this book to all girls who love history which is told in a good story.

The story is really for any ages but mostly i think 10-13 years old would enjoy it most as it is quite advanced reading! At the Sign of the Sugared Plum is about a young girl called Hannah. Her sister Sarah lived in London and owned her own sweetmeat shop. She sent Hannah a letter asking her if she wanted to come and help her in it, but Hannah didn't get the second letter saying for her not to come because the plague had struck not to far away from where Sarah was.

So Hannah arrived at her doorstep and Sarah had no choice but to keep her there. Hannah's friend Abby lived there and had been for a few years working as a maid for a really rich woman. Abby and everyone inside the house got the plague and was shut up but Hannah went every day to check on Abby through the window. It got so bad that Hannah and her sister had to take Abby's baby sister and got Abby's mistress's passport to get back to Dorchester where Hannah and Sarah were originally from. They survived getting there just by the skin of their teeth.

I think this was an amazing story because Mary Hooper made it seem like you were there and described the characters really well and made you be able to picture the whole scene in your head. I would recommend this book to people who like to learn about the past and find it very interesting.

In 1665 Hannah is full of excitement at her first trip to London. She receives a letter to go to London to help out her sister Sarah in her candy shop, "The Sugared Plum". But when she arrives she doesn't get the welcome she expected, because there was a plague taking hold of London. Everyone was dying from the plague so fast and so soon there was hardly anyone living in London. People were just buried and people didn't know where their friends or relatives were buried and people started leaving the City. Hannah found all this really upsetting. One morning Sahra found a lump on her left cheek and thought it was the sign of the plague. She was very frightened and Hannah was really worried and together they went to the doctors and found out that it was a sore swollen gum around her tooth. They were both really relieved! They returned to the shop and continued there normal life for a while.

Many people die so many of the houses have been shut up. Hannah has met a boy who lives near her called Tom who she fancies. Abi her best friend lives in London as well, she works as a serving girl in one of the big houses. As London is hit with the plague people fear for their lives. In the big house there is a baby, she is the only one left who dosen't have the plague so Abi, who already has the plague, steals her and gives her to Hannah. The plague has taken over the city now and Hannah and Sarah leave taking the baby with them. They leave pretending that Sarah is a mistress and Hannah is her servant.

At the Sign of the Sugared Plum is exciting historical book set back in 1665. It is engaging. A girl called Hannah lives in the country but goes to London to live with her sister Sarah. Sarah owns a shop called The Sugared Plum. To Sarah's disappointment, Hannah never got the warning letter to tell her to stay away from London. In 1665 the plague was taking over the streets of London.

I loved this book as it included a love story between Hannah and Tom. It blew me away with the detail. This book really makes you think what is was like to be around in London whilst a teenager. She saw some horrible sights but this book pulls you in. This book includes recipes for: Sugared Plums, Sugared Orange Peel, Candied Angelica, Marchpane Fruits and Frosted Rose Petals, all from the seventeenth century. I would recommend this book.

At The Sign Of The Sugared Plum is an exciting story as Hannah moves to london from the country to live with her aunt, but as soon as she arrives she finds out the plague has broken out in London . There are many deaths including some of Hannah's neighbours and friends, but inside that there is a heart warming love story. Hannahs works night and day making sweet meats to sell but as numbers drop they struggle to make a profit in London. I have enjoyed reading this book because it is not something I would usually read but now I can't put the book down. I love this book and has inspired me to write my own story and reraed more of Mary Hooper's books.

It's an ok book it does get a bit boring because it was set in the past so it didn't really make me want to read on. But it's good because it teaches you about history and the plague if you are intrested in history and the plague you would find it easier to read the book. i do not recomend it to younger readers or people who aren't interested in history.

This is a great book because it is set in the past times and is very educational even if you don't like school. There is a glossary in the back telling you the meanings of some of the old fashioned words and there are also recipes in the back for the sweetmeats they sold in the book. This might be hard for younger readers to read because of the choice of words.

I love this book. It's like you're virtually in the book and you can't get out untill you've finished it. I love the words that the author, Mary Hooper, has used. During the book you start to understand how life was in those days. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading.

The main characters of the story are Hannah, Sarah and Tom. Hannah is a country girl with bright, curly ginger hair and freckles. Sarah is her older, sensible sister. Tom is the apprentice of a doctor. The characters are very believable because the book is set in a proper historical time, and tells the story of the plague, which makes the character very realistic.

My favourite character is Abbey the maid. This is because she's funny, energetic and cheeky. Also, she reminds me a bit of my best friend, so I can relate to her very easily. As well as that, I like Abbey's characteristic like how she doesn't give up hope, even till the last minute.

My favourite part of the book is where Hannah goes to Dr. Da Silva's and she gets shocked when she sees his costume he uses for visiting sick and tainted patients. The description is very unusual.

My least favourite part of the book was where ***** dies (Editor: We can't give away this part of the story. If you want to find out who dies, you'll have to read the book!)

I would recommend this book to girls, who like, a slight challenge, adventure, history and romance. This is because that is most of the story.
