'Winter 1347

William crouched behind the fallen oak tree and listened. Close by, someone or
something was whimpering in pain.

"Oh, for pity’s sake . . . my leg." Soft groans, a snuffling grunt, and then, "My leg! Oh, my leg, mylegmylegmyleg, my leeeeg . . ."

Cautiously,William got to his feet and peered over the trunk of the tree. He could not see anyone. He stared around the woodland clearing uneasily. Frost rimed the hanks of dead grass and thin branches of hazel and elder bushes. Nothing moved. The whimpering stopped and William had the uncomfortable feeling he was being watched.

"Who’s there?" he called. He waited for several moments, and then called a little louder, "Do you need help?"

There was no reply.

William climbed over the tree. He lost his footing on the icy bark and fell, landing heavily on his hands and knees.

"Kill me, why don’t you?" a voice said, weak with pain and despair. "Land on top of me and finish the job. What is one hob more or less?" The voice trailed away into a low moan.

Startled, and more than a little alarmed, William scrambled to his feet and stared around. There was a movement in the grass by his feet. He leant down to take a closer look. The first thing he saw was a pair of large green eyes, flecked through with splinters of gold. The eyes stared back at him warily. Then he saw a small, pointed face, the skin as brown as a beechnut, pointed ears that ended in tufts of reddish brown hair and a small, thin body no bigger than a cat. A long, thin tail curled and uncurled around the body. He was a creature the like of which William had never seen before.

For a few moments, William’s mind went blank. He stared down into the large, watchful eyes and felt the hairs on the back of his neck hackle. This was neither animal nor man, but he could speak. What manner of creature could do that? Fear stroked a cold finger down his spine. His mouth had gone dry and his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. Part of him wanted to turn and run, but another part of him was rooted to the spot by curiosity.

And then William saw the blood, and the crude iron trap that gripped the creature’s leg in its rusty jaws.

"Oh, no," he breathed, horrified. "Stay still and I’ll try and free you." Whatever the thing was, he could not leave it to suffer like that.

Pushing his fear aside, William looked around for something to prise the trap open with. He grabbed a fallen branch and carefully wedged it between the jaws, taking care not to touch the creature’s injured leg. Slowly, he began to force the jaws apart. The creature gasped and, glancing down, William saw him clamp his mouth tightly shut against the pain.

"I’m sorry," William muttered. "It’s going to hurt, but I can’t help that."

The creature nodded and closed his eyes, and seemed to brace himself for William to continue.

Watching the small pain-twisted face, William leant his weight on the branch. The rusted hinge squealed. William gritted his teeth at the noise. The creature gripped his leg with his paws and eased it out of the trap. His fur was matted with blood and the leg was twisted at an unnatural angle. William let the branch go and the trap bit into the wood, almost snapping it in two.

"Your leg is broken," William said, "and that cut is very deep. If you let me take you back to the abbey, Brother Snail will be able to help you."

The creature shook his head. He rocked back and forth, keening under his breath with the pain. "No,no,no,no."

"But you can’t even walk by yourself, and you won’t last long in this cold. The abbey is not the warmest of places, but it’s better than freezing to death out here and Brother Snail is skilled at bone-setting."

The creature sat hunched on the frosty ground, his long thin arms wrapped tightly around his trembling body. The wound oozed dark blood. "No."

William shrugged helplessly. "You don’t really have a choice, unless you have someone else who can help you." He looked around uncertainly. Were there more of these creatures in Foxwist Wood? And what had it called itself? A hob? "Is there anyone?"

The hob shook his head again. "Nobody."

"Then it’ll have to be Brother Snail at the abbey."

"Mends hobs, does he?" The hob squinted up at him, a pinched expression on his face. William had the feeling the creature did not greatly trust humans.

"Likes hobs, does he?"

"I don’t think he’s ever met one," William said, after a moment’s thought. "But I know he will do what he can to help you, whatever you are."

The hob seemed to consider this. He winced as another wave of pain hit him and that seemed to help him make up his mind. "Very well," the creature gasped breathlessly, "I will come with you."’

The book starts with young William helping out a Hob who had got stuck in a trap and broken his leg. The story really begins when William takes the Hob to Crowfield Abbey to see Brother Snail about the injuries. William's parents died in a fire so William has had no proper education and is used as a servant.

My only criticism is that there is no evidence in the book to indicate that it is the first of the series and sometimes the pages can drag on and get really boring. Apart from that the book is ok but I wouldn't consider reading another one as this isn't my type of book. I would recommend it to people that like a bit of action and mystery in a book but not too much.

Although i didn't get this as the BOOKED UP book i had read it before. A really good book. A boy goes to live at an abbey, one day whilst collecting wood in the nearby forest he finds a mysterious creature caught in a trap. He brings it back and keeps it in secret, letting only one of the monks know - one that was particularly good at healing. The creature warns him of a Angel which some other people are searching for. I won't give any more away. It's a really amazing read - a bit of scariness, bit of action, bit of an adventure.

This book is about a boy called William, whose family died in a terrible fire, yet he survived miraculously. After that he had to live in a monastery with eleven monks who took him in, as long as he helped. One day he was out getting wood for the fire and as he trudged through the woods he came across an injured hob stuck in a trap. He can't just leave it there so he brings him to the monastery to be tended to. Since then his life will never be the same…

There are 2 main characters. One is a human boy, which is believable because one can see a human boy at least everyday, yet the other main character is a fantasy creature, which is not exactly believable. It is the opposite of a human boy; rather than seeing it everyday, one never usually comes across such a thing.

My favourite character is the hob. I like the hob because it’s unusual and interesting to understand how it acts and the way it thinks. I have felt sympathy for the hob, when it was trapped and it could not do anything about it, to save itself.

My favourite part of the book is when William has to get rid of the trap that had already harmed the hob, and the only place he can think of where nothing could be hurt by it, was a place where evil lurks and no sane person would enter, The Whistling Hollow. My least favourite part of the book is when William is telling the reader how his family perished in a fire. It makes me feel sorry for William.

I would recommend this book to someone because it is a very good book. If I had to recommend it to a certain type of person, I would recommend it to someone who likes a book that puts him or her on the edge of their seat waiting to see what happens next. I would give this book a: ☆☆☆☆

This book is about a boy named William Paynel who lives at an abbey. One day he finds a fey in the woods called a ‘hob’. Soon after he learns that an angel was shot and killed near the abbey, and buried there. When the two warring fey factions bring their battle to the abbey, Will has to help them find the angel, but what for? Can he trust them?

The story takes place in the winter of 1347 at a country abbey, with woods nearby. The atmosphere is kind of dreary and dark, but with no real political or natural tension. The theme may seem kind of strange: kind of fantasy horror, but unlike most other similar books, it takes place in medieval Britain, which is a fun twist. The characters are well described, and also fit the dreariness and fatigue that you would find in medieval monks.

My favorite character is probably the hob, who uses funny uneducated words such as nangel (angel). The main character is Will, who is only described as being 14 years old, and having untidy blond hair. Will is a likable character, who, like many heroes, gets caught up in something much bigger than what they thought they would have to deal with, and finds that they are very good at bullying baddies.

Verdict: Main character lives at dreary old abbey, finds hob in woods, finds out about stiff angel, tries to bring peace to fey factions. GOOD STORY!

This book is about a secret that affects a lot of different people and creatures. William is the main character. He is believable because you feel like you know him. The author created William like he really exists. He is sensitive and caring about people and animals. Shadlok is a secondary character. He is believable because he is human-like and he can talk. He is not believable because he has magical powers. The hob is also known as Brother Walter. The hob is as believable as any imaginary character can get. He has a lot of human traits like he is very sensitive and he can talk. He also has a lot of animal traits. The hob is not so comfortable at the start with William. Most animals would not be comfortable with a human they do not know. He also has fur and a tail. Brother Snail is believable because he is a monk and he does all the religious things that monks do. Brother Snail is also not believable because he has the gift of sight; that is he can see things that others cannot. The hob (i.e., Brother Walter) is my favourite character because he had the best character development and I thought that I knew the hob the most. I also liked him because he was sometimes funny and said words differently.

My favourite part of the book was when all the animals that the Dark King killed came back to life. I liked this because it made me feel so happy. William was also so relieved because it was difficult for him to see the animals die. My least favourite part of the book was in the middle, when Master Bone came to the Abbey. I felt that the story was very confusing and hard to follow at this point.

I would recommend this book to people that like mysteries. I would not recommend this book to people that are looking for an action packed story because this one is a little slow going.

the crowfield curse is about a young boy named William who was taken in at an abbey by some monks after a terrible accident. When he is thirteen he is forced to do chores and work for a roof to sleep under. He does not find this a great way to live and he dreams about being a musician. Soon everything changes when he befriends a strange creature called a hob, and is soon discovering secrets about the past...

The main character is william and he is filled with hopes and dreams about the future. he is very believable because you find lots of young people in the same situation as him. However there is some parts where he is not because there is magic involved. My favourite character is the hob beacause he is a magical creature and he gets things wrong which is quite funny.

My favourite part in the book is when william meets the hob because William saves him and that is a quite nice way to start a friendship, and it is the first time the hob comes in to the story. My least favourite part in the book is when William remembers his parents' death because it is quite sad and it makes me feel a bit sad as well.

This story is about a boy called Will who rescues a mysterious creature from a trap in the woods while collecting firewood. What will does not know is that when taking the hob back to Crowfield abbey he is letting himself into danger and a whole new world of creatures.

Will has lived at the abbey since his family died in a fire and is used asa servant for the monks. The year is 1347 and somone has died and been buried only this is something people thought could never die. The hob and two unwelcomed visitors who arrive at the abbey know all about it. Jacobus Bone, a leper was once a fine musician, one of the best . His servant is Shadlock a scary and sinister creature with terrible icy blue eyes (very unhuman like) and long silver hair. They are on a journey to find something and Will thinks it has something to do with an old legend.

This legend is strange and spooky and as Will meets other funny creatures he soon realises things were not as simple as they seemed at the abbey. Will starts to bring together all the facts with the help of the hob and his favourite monk Brother Snail who helped to heal the hob after being trapped. It seems that life at the abbey will never be the same well at least for Wll.

This book is a complete success but the ending was the worst part. This book is probably aimed at 10 and over because some of the words can confuse but its quite a simple story. A page turner and a really interesting book!

I think the Crowfield Curse is a very exciting and mysterious book. When i started reading it i thought it wasn't the book for me but when i read the first 10-20 pages i really enjoyed it! I haven't read the whole book so obviously i can't give a review about it all.

The book is written by Pat Walsh. The main character is called Will, he lives in this Abbey because his parents died a long time ago. One day he goes out to fetch some wood and suddenly he hears this cry.He follows the noise completly forgetting abot the wood, He sees this little hob stuck in a cage. There is blood everywhere. Will takes the hob back to the Abbey to get brother snail to help the him. Will notices he's forgotten the wood so he runs back and takes the cage as well so no more animals can get hurt Will decides to take a short cut home. Suddenly he hears these whispers, of course he starts freaking out. He carries on and ends up coming to this place hes never been before, he remembers hes been warned about this place. He throws the cage into a little pond and then the voice comes again and says something like. "This won't be forgotten, there wilol be more traps..." Will terrified runs.

This book is very gripping and mysterious. It has a lot of suspense in it. I think the author targeted this book to children aged 9-12. When i read this book there were times when i jumped because it was so spooky. The author really takes you to a whole different world. I would mark this book 4 and a half out of 5. My favorite part of the book is when Will enters the part of the forest he's been warned about, because it's really mysterious, exciting and scary. My favourite character is Will because he's so kind and caring and dares to do stuff he knows he shouldn't.

So far in the story I think that it starts very well. It doesn't give a lot of information about what is going to happen which leaves you wanting more... The Crowfield Curse is a fun and adventurous fantasy book, which includes many creatures and unknown life, adding exciting scenes to help make the book seem all the more real. As the story goes on you learn more about the characters and their home life, as well as learning about who the characters are, you find out about their thoughts and how they change as the suspense is built up. The way it is written makes you believe it is real and that you are seeing through the eyes of the completely original children's author Pat Walsh. I recommend this book to any child who enjoys new spooky and mysterious books.

I think the crowfield curse is good so far, but is quite confusing in some ways. i've only been reading some of it but I don't really find it appealing for my age group.

I think this book is a fabulous book, it tells a great story about a young boy that tells a desperate novel. It really does touch your heart at some parts. Even though it can be gruesome it is a FANTASTIC tale! You should read it!

I really enjoyed the book because it describes the abbey where William lives really well. The author also describes William very well: a poor orphan servant with hardly any friends. The book is very unpredictable and mysterious because of the description of the settings in the story and the book gets really tense when something is going to happen. I chose this as my free book because it had a very interesting cover and it intrigued me. I would recommend this book to both girls and boys. Overall I think it is a very good book.

I thought that this book had a really confusing start but by the time I had got past the first few pages then I was hooked on every line. I like books about mythical creatures and imaginative things so this book was something I thought I would have liked and I did. I loved the way the blurb told you about the story line but it didn't tell you everything. It was also intersting how it told about something that couldn't die and you automaticly start thinking what it could be and you don't get told what it is until later in the book.

I recommend it to anyone who likes a thriller and a scare. Not to anyone under the age of 9 it has a swear word in it and a fair amount of hard words. Here is my summary The story is about a boy named William and he is sent to Crowfield Abbey, after his house in Iwele got burnt down and killed his mother, father and the rest of the family that lived there. He was the only survivor and was brought to the Crowfield Abbey by a near by neighbour“Ohh how I long to back in Iwele” Prior Abbot the Abbeys leader took William in and raised him in the abbey. It would When Will is out collecting wood he finds a hob whose leg “My leg! Oh my leg, mylegmylegmyleg,my leeeeg.“ Gets caught in trap and is about to die. Will who is a kind hearted soul takes the hob back to Crowfield Abbey ,where Brother Snail the Abbeys ‘doctor monk’ can see the hob. But you need to have a special sight to see hobs and Will and Brother Snail have the sight. The hob stays in Crowfield Abbey and helps Will in every adventure he gets up to. But when two hooded strangers come and stay in the Abbey. William is cautious of them and tries to avoid them but it is William they are after . He knows a secret that is the secret of the Crowfield Curse. An Angel. “Nangle” As Brother Walter would say. Will is sent away to a hut in the woods where Shadlok one of the strangers comes to protect William from the Dark King who wants the secret too. Will William do his chosen tasks? Will he complete his duties? Can William defeat the Dark King? Read Crowfield Curse and you will find out!!

the crowfield curse is about a boy named will, he's an orphan so lives and does jobs in a monestry. When Will finds a mysterious creature his life changes drasticly and he hears lots of rumours about an angel. The book is a bit dull to the start but is more enjoyable to the end. I think it needs a sequel.
