Arctic Hero

Description

Arctic Hero
Catherine Johnson

American explorer Matthew Henson was one of the first men to reach the North Pole in 1909. However, his place in history as an extremely brave and resourceful explorer wasn’t formally acknowledged for many years, because of the colour of his skin. Finally in 2000, Matthew was awarded the Hubbard Medal, one of the highest honours the US government can give.

This is a great choice especially if you are sometimes put off by lots of text.

"This is a true story.

It's a story about trekking across the wide frozen Arctic, fighting snow blindness and frost-bite. It's about facing the risk of starving to death or drowning. It's about getting to the North Pole before anyone else.

But this is also a story about one man, Matthew Henson, who lived two very different lives."

The story is about a man called Matt wholead two lives. In one life he had alot of jobs and in the other went exploring with his friends who gave him a chance. On his first trip he went sailing with a man who took Matt onas if he was his own son. I really like this book because it is a true story and the anecote about his life was very decribtive and interesting. My favorite part was when he succeeded his mission in reaching the North Pole. I felt sorry forhim because his victory wasn't acknowleged for years due to the fact of him being black. a few years later when the US President gave rights to black people, Matt accepted the Hubbard Medal for his efforts.

This book is a must!.. You really get pulled into the life of Matthew Henson and can imagine what he must have gone through. Very sympathicly written, to think I might never have known about this man, if Catherine Johnson hadn't written this book. This just shows you that because of the colour of his skin he was deemed unimportant.

I think Arctic Hero is really good because it shows how far people go just to show how they feel and I love it how Matthew is so determined. It shows great responsibility and it's so fun to read, it is so hard to put the book down, also I think it's sad in the beginning of the book how Matthew had such a harsh life.

I read a book called Arctic Hero by Catherine Johnson, I thought this was a very good book because it's about the first black man to step foot on the exact point of the North Pole but when he got back he was still treated like a second class although his partner was treated like a saviour and was buried in the Arlington Cemetery with full honours. Matthew Henson (the first black man to step foot in the North Pole) was buried his local cemetery. But was then moved to the Arlington Cemetery next to his partner's with full honours.
